Program Description

Event Details

Learn how to bake apple crisp in your own kitchen! Ms. Liat will guide you through each step, show how math and science tie into baking, and share some excellent cookbooks from our library. This program is for all ages, whether you’re a preschooler, tween, or older, but an adult must be present. You will need to provide your own ingredients and kitchen tools, which are listed below. Please register only once per family. If you have more than one child attending, you can list all of their names in the name box.

INGREDIENTS:

2 pounds of Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1-inch pieces

  • Please prepare the apples before the program. You don’t need to prepare or measure any other ingredients ahead of time.
  • If you’re not able to get Golden Delicious apples, you can use another crisp, sweet type of apple like Honeycrisp or Braeburn.

2/3 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats (NOT quick oats)

1/4 cup light brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

5 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/4 cup white granulated sugar

2 teaspoons cornstarch

1/8 teaspoon salt

KITCHEN TOOLS:

Large mixing bowl

Medium mixing bowl

Microwave-safe bowl and plate to melt the butter (or use a saucepan over the stove)

Knife to cut through the wrapped stick of butter

Rubber spatula

Fork

Measuring cup and/or measuring scoops: any combination that will let you measure 1/4, 1/2, and 2/3 cup

If you’re using a measuring cup: 2 large spoons to scoop flour and oats into cup

If you’re using measuring scoops: knife to level off dry ingredients

Measuring spoons: 1/8 teaspoon, 1/2 teaspoon, 1 teaspoon

8-inch square baking dish

  • The baking dish should be made of glass, stoneware, ceramic, or porcelain. A metal pan will NOT work well for apple crisp!

Oven

Oven mitts

OPTIONAL: A cooling rack, hot plates, or other surface to let the baking dish cool
